About Birdwatching in the Tagus Estuary
The Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve is a living, breathing sanctuary of bird life that will transform how you see the natural world. From September to May, this spectacular wetland becomes a stage for one of nature’s most extraordinary performances. Resident birds call this home, while migratory species turn the estuary into a dynamic crossroads of avian journeys. With our Ornithologists by your side, you’ll get to know this Natura 2000 Special Protection Zone – a critical hub in the intricate network of bird migration.
Timing is everything in birdwatching. We strategically time our tours to coincide with low tide, when the mudflats reveal their hidden treasures. As the tide rises, we ensure your safety while maximising your chances of witnessing rare and beautiful bird species in their natural habitat.

Yes and no! Although this region is home to many birds, some species are migratory. This is the primary reason why seabird-watching tours are only conducted between September and May.
What other marine species can we observe?

Should I book the Birdwatching in Lisbon Boat tours in advance?
Yes. Birdwatching is a niche activity. We recommend booking in advance to help us coordinate dates with other clients and ensure the activity can be carried out.
Is there a minimum number of participants for the Birdwatching Tours to run?
Yes. The minimum number of people for Birdwatching in the Tagus Estuary is 4, and for Seabird-Watching, the minimum is 6. If we do not reach this number, we’ll try to reschedule.
Can I get seasick?
Some of our boat tours take place in very calm waters, with minimal waves. Therefore, it is improbable that you will get seasick. However, the Seabird-Watching Tour is in an open ocean and is subject to some waves. Our crew ensures that the tour is conducted in a safe and comfortable environment. Our crew suggests avoiding alcohol the day before, having a solid breakfast without milk or yoghurt, and getting a good night’s sleep. You can bring along a sea-sickness wristband or tablets, just in case!
What happens if the Birdwatching Tour is cancelled?
All boat tours are subject to the weather and sea conditions. Safety first! Suppose the Birdwatching tour is expected to be cancelled. In that case, our team will contact you within 24 hours of the activity to attempt rescheduling. The tour may be cancelled at the last minute due to foggy mornings or unforeseen weather circumstances. If you cannot reschedule, you’ll be 100% refunded.
Do I need to know how to swim for the Birdwatching in Lisbon boat tour?
You don’t need to know how to swim. On this tour, swimming is not allowed, and it is not our intention to get you wet. If you want to swim in the Ocean, it is better to book a private tour. Before embarking, we will provide a lifejacket and give a safety briefing at the Marina for everyone’s protection.
Is the Birdwatching in Lisbon Boat Tour suitable for babies, pregnant women or people with back problems?
Unfortunately, no. The Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) are not recommended for toddlers under 4 years old, pregnant women or people with severe back and neck problems. If you have any concerns about this subject, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
